5 Mistakes That Make a Playlist Cover Look Amateur

Most covers that look off don't have one big obvious flaw, they have one of these five small ones. Check for these before you call a design finished.

1. Title text with no plan for contrast

A mid-gray title over a mid-tone photo is the single most common cause of a cover that looks unfinished. Pick light text on a dark image or dark text on a light one, and commit to it.

2. Too many fonts in one design

One display font for the title and, at most, one simpler font for the artist name or a kicker line is plenty. Three or four different fonts on one small square reads as indecision, not style.

3. Text that touches the edge of the frame

Most platforms round the corners of a square cover or crop it slightly differently across devices. Text sitting flush against an edge risks getting visually clipped, leave real margin on all four sides.

4. Never checking it at thumbnail size

A cover gets designed at full screen size and viewed almost everywhere else at a fraction of that. Zoom your browser out or shrink the preview before finishing, details that read fine at full size often disappear entirely once small.

5. An image that has nothing to do with the playlist

A striking photo that doesn't match the mood of the music undersells both. The cover is the first signal of what someone's about to hear, pick an image whose temperature, warm or cool, busy or minimal, actually matches the playlist.

None of these require design training to fix, they're just easy to miss without a second look. Give a finished cover one more glance at thumbnail size before you download it.
