A Facebook cover photo is the wide banner at the top of a profile or page, and it's one of the more commonly mis-sized images out there since the platform crops it a little differently depending on where it's viewed.

820×312px (2.63:1). Facebook compresses covers fairly aggressively, so start with a crisp, high-contrast image rather than anything with fine detail or small text that might soften after upload.

Design around the profile photo overlap

On desktop, the circular profile photo sits over the bottom-left corner of the cover. On mobile, the crop shifts and shows a narrower band overall. Keep anything essential, a logo, a headline, a face, in the upper-right two-thirds of the frame so it survives both layouts.

Same rules as any other banner

One focal point, strong contrast between the text and the image behind it, and a short line instead of a paragraph. A cover photo gets glanced at for a second on a profile visit, not read closely.
